Choosing sauna accessories that fit
Not every accessory suits every sauna. A bucket and ladle are for a Finnish sauna or a garden sauna with a heater. In an infrared sauna you do not pour water, so a backrest, lighting or a bench cover is more useful there.
Pay attention to the material. Wood such as red cedar, hemlock, spruce or thermowood looks natural and stays fairly cool to the touch. Metal parts can get very hot in a Finnish sauna, so check that handles are made of wood or have a heat-resistant grip. Also check that lighting is made for use in a sauna.
Care and maintenance
Good care helps your sauna last longer. Use a bench cover or towel to protect the wood. Clean the benches regularly with a mild product made for sauna wood. Let the cabin dry well after each session by leaving the door open. For outdoor saunas, also treat the outside of the wood now and then.
Replacing your heater stones? Check the advice of the heater maker. Our sauna heater guide also explains more about stones and heaters.

Questions about sauna accessories
Which sauna accessories do I really need?
For a Finnish sauna, a bucket, ladle and thermometer are the basics. For an infrared cabin, a backrest and a bench cover are useful first choices.
Can I pour water in an infrared sauna?
No. An infrared cabin has no stones or heater for water. Pouring water only works with a Finnish heater.
How often should I replace sauna stones?
That depends on how often you use the sauna. Replace stones when they crumble or crack, and follow the advice of the heater maker.
Can I use normal lighting in a sauna?
No. Use lighting that is made for the heat and humidity in a sauna, and let an electrician install it.
