Which outdoor sauna are you looking for?
A barrel sauna is a round outdoor sauna that looks like a large wooden barrel lying on its side. The round shape means there is less empty space to heat, so it warms up efficiently. On this page you can compare every sauna barrel on offer from several retailers, from compact models to long barrels with a porch.
Why choose a barrel sauna?
The round shape heats efficiently and gives the sauna a cosy feel. Many barrels have a small porch or a changing area at the front. They fit well in most gardens and are often quick to assemble. Check the number of persons and the inside length before you choose. Many people find it relaxing to cool down outside after a session.
- Heater: choose an electric heater or a wood-fired heater. Electric heaters use 3.5 to 9 kW. Up to about 3.6 kW can often run on 230 V. Larger heaters need 400 V three-phase power.
- Heat: with a Finnish heater the air reaches about 70 to 100 °C. Water on the stones gives steam. Warm-up takes about 30 to 60 minutes.
- Wood: spruce, thermowood, hemlock or red cedar. Thermowood is often chosen for outdoor use.

Placing a barrel sauna
A barrel needs a flat, stable foundation, such as paving slabs or a concrete base. Make sure rainwater can drain away. A roof covering protects the wood, and the wood needs regular maintenance. Also check your local permit rules before you build. Our outdoor sauna buying guide explains these steps in detail.
Prefer straight walls or more room inside? Then look at other outdoor saunas.
What does a barrel sauna cost?
A barrel sauna costs about €5,000 to €14,000 or more. These prices are indicative and change often. The price depends on the length, the wood, the type of heater, the porch and extras like windows or lighting. Also keep a budget for the foundation and the electrical work or chimney. Ask the retailer whether delivery and assembly are included.
